Steel pipes can be divided into two categories according to production methods

Steel pipes can be divided into two categories according to production methods: seamless pipes and welded pipes, with welded pipes abbreviated as welded steel pipes.

1. Seamless pipes can be divided into hot-rolled seamless steel pipes, cold drawn pipes, precision seamless steel pipes, hot expanded pipes, cold stamped pipes, and extruded pipes according to production methods. Seamless pipes are made of high-quality carbon steel or alloy steel, which can be divided into hot-rolled steel and cold-rolled steel (drawing).

2. Welded pipes are divided into furnace welded steel pipes, electric welding (resistance welding) pipes, and automatic arc welded pipes due to differences in welding techniques. Due to differences in welding methods, they are divided into straight seam welded steel pipes and spiral welded steel pipes. Due to their end shapes, they are further divided into circular welded steel pipes and special-shaped (square, flat, etc.) welded steel pipes. Welded pipes are made of thick steel plates rolled into a tubular shape and welded with butt or spiral seams. In terms of production methods, they are further divided into welded pipes for low-pressure fluid transportation, spiral seam welded pipes, directly rolled welded pipes, welded pipes, etc. Seamless pipes are suitable for liquid pressure steel pipes and gas pipelines in various industries. Welded pipes are suitable for water pipelines, gas pipelines, heating pipelines, electrical steel pipes, etc.

Seamless pipes generally have a relatively high cost and are often used for small diameters. Their use is now limited to welded pipes. Our common oil and gas pipelines are mostly welded pipes.
